Sheena Calvert
artist/writer/philosopher

Sheena Calvert is a writer, philosopher (of language/technology/politics), artist, printmaker, book artist, educator, questioner and lover of language. Her studio,the tiny press, is in West London where she makes work about language. She calls this work ‘metalanguage’, using language to interrogate language. This involves experimenting with metal and wood type, her many typewriters and much more, to create a ‘material’ philosophy of language. She has been an educator in many places, over a long period of time, working across numerous subject areas. These have included the University of the Arts, London (CSM Art and Science, Camberwell Graphic Design), The Royal College of Art (Visual Communication) and Rutgers University (Design and Art). She has an MFA degree from Yale University and recently gained another MA, in political philosophy and ethics, from King’s College. Her PhD is from University of Greenwich, in philosophy and aesthetics.

Adrian Holme is a lecturer in MA Art & Science, Central St Martins. His research explores the impact of technology upon human agency, the history and philosophy of science, and alchemy’s legacy. Adrian has contributed to books and publications in art, science, aesthetics and pedagogy. An associate editor of the Journal of Illustration, he serves on the International Steering Committee of Illustration Research. He is a contributor to It’s Freezing in LA!. His creative practice encompasses drawing, ceramics, installation and performance.

Luke Pendrell is an artist/writer, working with moving-image, photography, sound-art, performance and installation. He is interested in the edges of our perception and the ghosts, ruins and fragments that we find there, entangling art, science, philosophy and the occult to disturb and reimagine the established order of things. He studied Fine Art Sculpture & Interdisciplinary Arts at University of Leeds and has an MA from the Royal College of Art, London, where he is academic lead of MFA Communication.

LadyM is an olfactory artist, creating works primarily for stimulation of personal memory recall. Her practice incorporates the study of both the philosophical and psychological aspects of odours. Through sculpture, painting, print and the invisible, she delivers art that can surprise, intrigue, and even amuse. She also promotes olfactory wellbeing, presenting at seminars and conferences on olfaction and memory. Her smell walks examine the odours of urban smellscapes, exploring specific olfactory phenomenological experiences.

Susan Stewart has lived in many places across the world. She speaks (to varying degrees) English, French, Dutch, German, Afrikaans, Swedish, Arabic and BSL. She has a background in international education, leading multilingual language programmes. Her particular interest is in language policy, and in promoting multilingualism within families, schools and nationally. Susan has a BA in French and Linguistics (University of South Africa) and a Master’s in Linguistics & Communication (Birkbeck College, London).

Hannah Lammin is a philosopher and artist exploring intersections between digital technologies, human culture, and the environment. Drawing on her artistic practice in dance, circus and performance design, Hannah’s research uses embodied and site-specific methods to articulate the topologies of thought that emerge in events of translation between language – visual, textual, verbal – and the more-than-human world. She is Senior Lecturer in Media Theory at the University of Greenwich, and a member of the Research Centre for Spatial and Digital Ecologies.
