Working Group 01:

EMERGENCE

This first Tickbird&Rhino Working Group developed around the question: What is Emergence?

Posed by Caroline Lambard who works with emergent form in her drawings and installations, the question was asked of artists, physicists, designers and mathematicians - anyone, in fact, who might have an opinion. The idea was to find out what emergence means to individual practitioners and and how it applies to their work.  After kicking the question around for a while and discussing it with many people, Caroline felt that creating a working group with people she’d spoken to would be a great way to share some of the interesting perspectives they’d described.

Since emergence is so broadly defined - meaning different things to different people, often within the same discipline - these first meetings will look at the place of emergence in creative practices.  The format will be a series of casual 'survey discussions' aimed at information gathering rather than concept development, where each person is given the opportunity to explain what they regard as emergent qualities in their work.  Future groups will open up the discussion to other disciplines, exploring the subject in more detail and depth over time.
