On February 18th we were back at the Devereux Pub and this time completely in the dark. Literally.
This joint presentation by artist-researchers Harun Morrison & Kim Coleman was held in complete darkness with only the courtyard lights out the window and the occasional striking of a match to illuminate the room and the faces of those speaking . Kim and Harun recently completed a two-year project with Richmond Council where they held a series of night-time community walks using creative exercises to consider the intersecting needs for darkness in everyday life and for this talk they recreated those unlit conditions and outlined their work while expanding the ideas and processes they explored through their collaborative artistic research.
The artists also reflected upon how they each incorporate darkness into their individual practices and how the dark is designed into (and out of) our public spaces and the impact that has on our urban experience. They also asked the audience to share their own experiences in the dark which made for an entertaining and engaging evening of conversation for everyone there.

Kim Coleman is a London-based artist working in light-based installation, photography, and expanded moving image. Her photograms (analogue photographic images made without the use of a camera or lens) have no traditional photographic subject, instead they operate as traces: records of interactions between objects and light that hold the conditions of their making.
